9 May : “Europe day” !
Since 1985, every 9th of May, we celebrate “Europe Day”.
Why this date ?
To commemorate the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950.
Robert Schuman : twice Prime Minister of France, the former Minister of Finance and a Foreign Minister, he played a key role in building post-war European institutions and was one of the founders of the European Union, the Council of Europe and NATO.
His declaration is considered to be the starting point of the European Union. While the European countries are still affected, because of the Second World War, governments are betting that with the pooling of coal and steel production, any war between France and Germany, -historically rivals- will be impossible.
Therefore, the European Coal and Steel Community is created and will be called ECSC.
